(CNN)Rand Paul, the libertarian-minded freshman senator who was once viewed as a formidable presidential contender, is suspending his White House bid.
Paul discussed the matter with staff Wednesday morning and sent out a statement confirming the decision to drop out of the Republican presidential primary.
"It's been an incredible honor to run a principled campaign for the White House," Paul said in the statement. "Today, I will end where I began, ready and willing to fight for the cause of Liberty."
Paul, a Kentucky Republican, is expected to instead place his focus squarely on his Senate reelection bid, where he faces a wealthy Democrat, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, who has the money to partially finance his campaign.

"I am officially suspending my campaign," the former Arkansas governor tweeted Monday night. "Thank you for all your loyal support. #ImWithHucK"Huckabee's decision to suspend the campaign was not planned, but after seeing the results he decided it was best to step out of the race.
"He is going to continue to push for the issues he believes, but right now this is about thanking his staff and supporters and being with his friends and families and see what doors will open next," said Hogan Gidley, Huckabee's spokesman.

Washington (CNN)Scott Walker announced Monday he is dropping out of the GOP presidential race.
The Wisconsin governor entered the primary in July as a front-runner in Iowa and a darling of both the conservative base and powerful donors after winning battles against public unions in his left-leaning home state. But that promising start was quickly dashed after poor debate performances dried up support from donors.

"Today, I believe that I am being called to lead by helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive, conservative message can rise to the top of the field. With this in mind, I will suspend my campaign immediately," Walker said at a news conference in Madison, Wisconsin.

He encouraged other trailing Republican candidates to follow his path.

Women have played a key role in the Republican Party since its establishment in 1854.

The Republican Party and Republican women were the primary force behind the women's suffrage movement and the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Republican women have made history as the first women to serve in key positions, including Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress.

Republican women such as Debby Barrett (pictured) continue to explore uncharted territory on behalf of all women. Barrett is the first woman to serve as president of the Montana State Senate. Read more about Barrett
